What I Know About Fishing

Catch You Outdoors with Captain Rob Modys

A podcast about outdoor recreation in the Florida Keys

About the Author, Songwriter, Podcaster

I grew up in Clearwater, Florida and started fishing the beaches there in 1959. I spent six years in the US Coast Guard in the early 70’s, and later owned and operated a business or two in Kentucky. I eventually made my way back to Florida’s east coast in the early 90’s.

I started a charter fishing business in 2000 and fished Biscayne Bay, the upper Florida Keys and then migrated to Florida’s Southwest coast where I charter fished from Boca Grande south to the Ten Thousand Islands, focusing mainly on Pine Island Sound, Matlacha Pass and Estero Bay.

During my time on the southwest coast I taught fishing classes for Collier County Adult Education and Bass Pro Shops. I also hosted my own fishing radio show, Reel Talk Radio, for a little over ten years on ESPN Southwest Florida radio. I fished tournaments and worked the fishing seminar trail, but was finally forced to throw in the towel and retire almost ten years ago to fight a persistent case of cancer. I’m doing much better, but the fight continues.

I’ve published four books, written and released a number of songs, and currently reside in the fabulous Florida Keys with my wife, JoNell, and a very spoiled cat we refer to as our fuzzy child. We boat, fish, bike and hike, and continue to promote the outdoor wonders of Florida with a focus on the Florida Keys.

From the backwaters of the Ten Thousand Islands of Florida to the Highlands of Scotland, Captain Rob Modys has lived a somewhat nomadic life, traveling and fishing in spots most people only dream about visiting. Bridge to Paradise, Stories of Fishing, Travel and Life, is a compilation of his adventures on the water and on the road, along with the struggles, and sometimes tragedies of everyday life. Modys has been writing short stories, logging fishing trips and keeping a journal for the past 25 years and has finally put a good many of those stories in one place, Bridge to Paradise.

What I Know About Fishing Southwest Florida

Price Includes Shipping

$24.95

What I Know About Fishing Southwest Florida is a straight-forward vault of information on how to improve one’s successes at catching the major inshore species from the Ten Thousand Islands through Charlotte Harbor. Derived from decades of fishing these waters as a guide and angling educator, Captain Rob Modys digs deep into the sciences, revealing how weather, tides, moon phases and other external factors influence the movements and feeding patterns of tarpon, snook, redfish, sea trout, permit and others. The respective top artificial lures, natural baits and terminal rigs are covered, obtained from Modys’ time on the water. The science slant alone is well worth the cost of the book. Add in everything else on scoring Southwest Florida’s key inshore species along with a smattering of stories and humor, and this book will prove hard to put down. George Poveromo

What I Know About Fishing The Florida Keys

Fishing in the Florida Keys is complicated. The chain of islands is 125 miles long, with fishing approached differently from Key Largo to Islamorada, through Marathon, Big Pine, the Lower Keys, and finally, Key West. The Keys encompass not only the Atlantic Ocean waters but those of Florida Bay and the Gulf of America. There are hundreds of small islands that dot the waters of Florida Bay and forty-two bridges that hold fish beneath them. As a longtime Southwest Florida charter captain, ESPN Radio fishing show host, saltwater fishing class instructor, and author, Captain Rob Modys has worked to demystify the science and sport of fishing for thousands of anglers. During those many years, Modys’s favorite getaway location was the Florida Keys, with many visits over the years focused primarily on fishing. Since moving to the Florida Keys in 2022, Modys has expanded on his own knowledge of the multitude of fishing styles and opportunities throughout the subtropical island chain. By no means does Modys profess to know all there is to know about how to fish all the waters of the Florida Keys. What I Know About Fishing the Florida Keys provides valuable insight for both beginning and experienced anglers based on the culmination of his own experiences, valued input and stories from other captains and recreational anglers, and his countless hours on Florida waters.
